What each one actually is
The comparison is usually framed as a contest, which is why most of what you read about it is unhelpful. They are not the same mechanism.
A bio link is a standing address. Anyone who lands on your profile, from search, Explore, a shared post or a Story, can use it, and it keeps working whether or not you posted this week. It is one destination, so the more different things you sell, the less any one visitor finds what they came for.
Comment-to-DM is a reply. It only reaches people who typed a keyword under a post, but each of them gets the exact link for that post, in a private thread, within seconds. It cannot serve your profile visitors and it is not a replacement for having an address.
Who it reaches
- Link in bio
- Anyone who visits your profile
- Comment-to-DM
- Only people who commented a keyword
What it takes from them
- Link in bio
- Leave the post, open the profile, tap through
- Comment-to-DM
- Nothing, it arrives in their inbox
How many destinations
- Link in bio
- One page, or a menu of links
- Comment-to-DM
- One link per keyword, matched to the post
Where it works
- Link in bio
- Profile, Story link stickers, anywhere you paste it
- Comment-to-DM
- Comments on posts and Reels, Story replies
Afterwards
- Link in bio
- Stays until you change it
- Comment-to-DM
- Stays in their inbox as a thread you can continue
Side effect
- Link in bio
- None
- Comment-to-DM
- Each comment is engagement on the post

About the numbers you have seen
Search this question and you will find confident click-through comparisons: a few percent for bio links, low double digits for DMs. Those figures come almost entirely from companies selling DM automation, ourselves included. We have not seen an independent study, and we are not going to repeat a number we cannot stand behind.
What can be said without inventing anything is structural. A bio link asks someone to leave what they are watching, find your profile and choose from a page; a DM removes all three steps and arrives having been requested. Fewer steps between wanting something and getting it is not a marketing claim, it is just how the two flows are shaped.
Measure it on your own account instead. Run one Reel with a keyword CTA and one with a bio-link CTA, and compare what each produced. Your audience is the only sample that matters, and it takes a week.
How most accounts end up running both
The division that works is simple: the bio link is for people who came looking for you, the keyword is for people who are looking at one particular post.
- Keep the bio link as your address. Your shop, your main offer, or a link page if you genuinely have several.
- Give each post its own keyword for the thing that post is about, so nobody has to hunt for it.
- Say the keyword out loud in the Reel as well as in the caption. Spoken CTAs get typed more often than written ones.
- Use the bio link in Stories, where comments do not exist. Story replies can trigger a DM, but a link sticker is simpler for a one-off.
If you only ever sell one thing and post about it constantly, the bio link alone is fine. The case for keywords grows with how many different things you post about.
When the bio link is the better answer
Worth saying plainly, since this page could be read as an argument for our own product:
- People arriving from search, Explore or a shared profile never see your posts' comments.
- A Story with a link sticker is one tap and needs no keyword at all.
- If your offer genuinely is a menu, a link page does a job one DM cannot.
- Posts that are not about anything purchasable do not need a keyword, and adding one to every post trains your audience to ignore them.
Adding the keyword half
If you already have the bio link, this is the part that is missing:
- 1
Connect the account
Instagram professional account or Facebook Page, through Meta's login. - 2
Pick one word per thing you sell
LINK, SHOP, GUIDE, or the product name. One word, said in the caption, matched anywhere in the comment. - 3
Write the DM the post deserves
The link, one line of context, and nothing else. On Pro the link can be a tappable button. - 4
Choose the scope
This post, or every post from now on. Keep the bio link exactly as it is.
Then compare a week of each, on your own numbers, and keep whichever the audience actually used.
