Instagram giveaway automation

A giveaway is the fastest way to collect a thousand comments and the fastest way to drown in DMs. Automation turns every entry into an instant confirmation, gives you a clean list of entrants, and, if you set it up that way, an email list that outlives the prize.

See it working

The whole setup, start to finish.

Why giveaways break without automation

The maths is unkind. A post that draws 800 entries is 800 people expecting acknowledgement, and answering them by hand at twenty seconds each is over four hours of typing you will not do:

  1. Giveaway post
  2. They comment ENTER
  3. Instant confirmation DM

Automation makes the confirmation instant and identical in quality for entrant number 1 and entrant number 800. It also makes the entry list something you can actually read afterwards, rather than a comment thread you scroll.

Setting up the giveaway

Build it before you post, not while the comments arrive:

  1. 1

    Decide the entry action

One keyword comment is the cleanest: easy to explain, easy to verify, easy to automate. Extra conditions like tagging a friend are yours to check manually afterwards.
  2. 2

    Write the confirmation DM

Confirm the entry, say when the winner is announced, and add one link: the product, the shop or the newsletter. This message is the only reason the giveaway is worth running.
  3. 3

Turn on email capture if you want the list

On paid plans the DM can ask for an email before or alongside the confirmation. This is what turns a prize into an audience.
  4. 4

    Set the keyword and publish

Make the keyword a word nobody types by accident. ENTER, IN and ME all work; avoid a word that appears in ordinary comments.
  5. 5

    Test, then announce

Comment the keyword from another account and check the DM arrives. Then post, and pin a comment with the closing date.

Check your plan allowance before a giveaway: the Free plan covers 1,000 DMs a month, and a good giveaway can use that in a day.

The rules to respect

Giveaways attract scrutiny, and the platform rules change. The constants:

  • You run the promotion, not Meta. State the terms, the eligibility and the closing date in the post, and make clear the promotion is not associated with Instagram.
  • Describe entry accurately. If a follow is required, say so. If you ask people to tag someone, do not ask them to tag themselves in something they are not in.
  • Only reply to people who acted. A comment is an interaction, so the confirmation is allowed. Messaging people who never entered is not.
  • Pace the sending. Thousands of identical DMs in one minute is the pattern platforms look for. Queued batches are the safe way.
  • Check the current guidelines. Meta updates its promotion rules; read them before you publish rather than trusting a blog post from last year.

The account safety guide explains how paced delivery works and what a large campaign looks like from Meta's side.

After the draw

The giveaway is not the campaign; what happens to the entrants is. Most accounts lose the entire audience the day they announce a winner.

What to do with the entrants

  • Announce the winner publicly, and DM them
  • Send everyone else a consolation offer, not silence
  • Keep the emails you collected and actually use them
  • Note which post format drew the entries, and repeat it
  • Do not run another giveaway immediately; sell something first

The lead generation guide covers turning a burst of attention into a list that still converts three months later.

A fantastic tool with great potential. Komently is already impressive, and the support has been excellent. I’m excited to see what comes next!

Frequently asked questions

How do I automate an Instagram giveaway?+

Set a keyword such as ENTER, publish the giveaway post telling people to comment it, and let the automation send every commenter a confirmation DM. You get a list of entrants without opening a single conversation by hand.

Can automation pick the winner?+

No. Komently confirms entries and collects the list; choosing and verifying the winner is yours to do, which is also what keeps the draw defensible if anyone questions it.

Can I require people to follow me to enter?+

On paid plans you can require a follow before the confirmation is sent. Be careful to describe the entry requirements accurately in the post, and to follow the promotion rules of the platform.

Will everyone who comments get a DM?+

Everyone who comments the keyword, once each. Sending is paced in safe batches, so a giveaway that draws thousands of comments is delivered steadily rather than all at once.

What if the giveaway blows past my plan limit?+

On the Free plan sending pauses when the monthly DM allowance is used up and resumes next month. Giveaways are the campaign most likely to hit it, so check the allowance before you post or move to an unlimited plan first.

Can I message the entrants after the giveaway?+

Only within Meta's rules: you may reply to people who interacted with you, inside the allowed window. The reliable way to keep the audience is to collect emails during entry, which is a paid feature.

Are giveaways against Instagram's rules?+

No, but you are responsible for running them lawfully and for stating the terms clearly. Check Meta's current promotion guidelines before you publish, since they change.
