The three triggers that matter
An automated Instagram message is a DM sent through Meta’s official messaging API in response to something a person did. Tools that log in with your password or scrape usernames are a different category, and the one that gets accounts restricted. Compliant tools connect through Meta’s login, so nobody needs to be online watching for triggers.
Comment-to-DM
Someone comments a keyword on a post or Reel and the DM fires within seconds. It generates the most volume on active accounts, and Komently can also reach people who commented the keyword on posts from the last seven days. The full setup is in the comment-to-DM guide.
Story reply automation
Someone reacts to or replies to a Story and receives a follow-up DM. Strong for limited-time offers, resource reveals and polls, because the audience is already engaged when they act.
Keyword auto-replies in DMs
Someone messages “pricing” or “info” and gets the relevant answer. It is the simplest workflow to build and one of the highest-leverage for service businesses and educators, because it handles the same five questions around the clock.
Who this works for
The pattern is the same for every business. What changes is the offer and the next step.
Course creator
- Post says
- “Comment GUIDE for the free lesson planner.”
- They comment
- GUIDE
- Komently sends
- The planner link, then a question that collects the email for the course sequence.
Skincare brand
- Post says
- “New serum drops Friday. Comment DEAL for early access.”
- They comment
- DEAL
- Komently sends
- An exclusive code and the product link; redemptions per code show the campaign’s return.
Local gym
- Post says
- “Story: Reply JOIN to book your free trial class.”
- They comment
- JOIN
- Komently sends
- The booking link, straight into the schedule, with no manual handoff.
Agency
- Post says
- “Client Reel: Comment AUDIT for the free checklist.”
- They comment
- AUDIT
- Komently sends
- The same flow across every client account, from one dashboard, with per-client reporting.
How to set up your first workflow
The account must be an Instagram professional account, Business or Creator. Switching is free and takes about a minute in Instagram’s settings. Komently connects it directly through Meta’s login; no Facebook Page is required, though you can add one.
- 1
Connect through Meta’s login
Grant the permissions on Meta’s own screen. Never type your Instagram password into a third-party dashboard; that is the clearest sign a tool is not using the official API.
- 2
Choose the trigger
A comment keyword on one post or every post, a Story reply, or an incoming DM keyword. One trigger per automation keeps the reporting clean.
- 3
Write the response
Text, a link, a button card, an image, or an AI reply from one instruction about your tone and offer. Add an email ask if you want the contact, not just the click.
- 4
Test, then activate
Comment the keyword from a second account and read the DM out loud. Confirm the link opens and any email field saves. Then switch it on before you publish.
Catching a broken link before the post goes out during a high-traffic window saves a lot of cleanup. Once one workflow is live, adding a second takes a minute.
DM templates that don’t feel robotic
Most automated DMs fail on the copy, not the tool. These three templates each do one job. Adapt the wording, keep the length.
The link-delivery DM, built for clicks
Lead with a brief value cue, deliver the link, and end with a low-friction question. The question is what keeps the conversation open instead of turning the interaction into a dead end.
Hey! Here’s the free guide you asked for: [link]. Quick question: is your biggest challenge getting more leads, or converting the ones you already have?
The lead-qualifier DM, built for conversion
After the resource lands, one qualifier question filters intent before any sales ask. It also makes the follow-up feel relevant rather than pushy, because the answer decides what you send next.
Glad you grabbed it! Before I share anything else: are you growing an audience from scratch, or do you already have followers and want to monetise them better?
The welcome DM, built for replies
For first-time commenters. Reference the post they engaged with, offer something immediately useful, and ask an easy question. Short, warm openers earn more replies than multi-paragraph introductions.
Thanks for commenting on the Reels growth post! I put together a quick checklist on what’s working right now. Want me to send it over?
What Meta allows, and what quietly gets accounts restricted
The rules are simple once you see them as one principle: if the person did not do something that invites the DM, do not send it.
Permitted
- DMs triggered by a comment, Story reply or incoming message
- Follow-ups inside the 24-hour window, which resets on each reply
- Tools that connect through Meta’s login and the official API
- Paced sending that stays inside Instagram’s limits
Prohibited
- Cold DMs to people who have not engaged, and mass broadcasts to follower lists.
- Password logins and scraping tools, which operate outside the API.
- Identical repetitive messages in bursts, and messages outside the 24-hour window.
The full compliance checklist, including how Komently paces sends, is in safe DM automation for Instagram and Facebook.
Metrics to track, and how to improve them
Three numbers tell you whether a workflow is working. Give each version at least 200 triggers before drawing conclusions; smaller samples mislead.
- Response rate. How many recipients reply. Low means the opener does not feel natural; test one that names the post they engaged with.
- Conversion rate. Clicks, email captures or sales per DM sent. Low click-through means the link sits too late; low sales means a qualifier question is missing before the pitch.
- Follow rate. For follow-to-unlock flows, how many people follow to get the asset. It shows the automation growing the account while it delivers value.
Change one thing at a time. A workflow that hits its numbers on 300 triggers will teach you more about your audience than months of manual replies.
One workflow is all it takes to start
Pick the trigger that fits: comment-to-DM for creators and educators, Story replies for promotions and launches, keyword auto-replies for the questions you answer every day. Build one, test it from a second account, and track the three metrics before scaling.
When the flow works and you want the contact as well as the click, continue with the Instagram lead generation guide.
