How a Facebook auto responder works
The mechanism is simple. A person comments a keyword on your post, such as FREE, LINK or BOOK. The automation detects it and sends a private reply into their Messenger inbox, plus a short public reply under the comment so other readers see it worked.
- Comment with keyword
- Public reply
- Messenger reply
- Link or booking
- Lead
This is different from a Page’s instant reply, which only fires when someone opens Messenger and writes first. Comment-triggered replies reach people who would never take that extra step on their own.
Speed is the whole advantage. Leads contacted within minutes convert far better than leads contacted the next morning, and Messenger replies are read far more reliably than email. An auto responder hits that window every time, including at 11pm on a Tuesday.
Meta Business Suite’s own tools, and where they stop
Meta gives every Page free inbox automations, and they are worth using. In Meta Business Suite, open Inbox, then Automations, then Create automation: instant replies to first messages, away messages when your team is offline, and answers to frequently asked questions.
They are inbox-level tools. They respond to messages people send you, not to comments people leave on your posts. The moment you want a keyword in a comment to trigger a Messenger reply, you need a platform built for that workflow, using Meta’s Messenger API for private replies.

Facebook Marketplace auto-replies are a separate, narrower feature for listing questions like “Is this still available?”. Useful for sellers, but they do not extend to keyword triggers, lead capture or comment-based flows.
Setting up the auto responder with Komently
Komently connects to your Page through Meta’s official login, so you authenticate with Meta, never through a third-party credential form, and your Page permissions stay under your control. Most Pages have their first automation live within one session.
- 1
Connect your Facebook Page
Sign in through Meta’s login and pick the Page. Your password is never shared with Komently.
- 2
Create an automation
Choose Comment to DM. One automation per offer keeps the reporting clean.
- 3
Set the trigger
Pick the post to watch, or every post you will publish, and define the keyword: FREE, LINK, BOOK, DEMO.
- 4
Write the Messenger reply
Text with a link, a button card, or an AI reply that writes a different on-brand message for each commenter. Add a public comment reply so others see it worked.
- 5
Turn it on
From that moment every qualifying comment gets a reply, whether you are at your desk or not.
Before you publish the post, run through the go-live checklist:
- Page connected through Meta’s login
- Keyword defined and promoted in the post
- Messenger reply written and previewed
- Post or Story selected
- Automation switched on
Here is what it looks like in practice. A course creator posts a Reel offering a free guide and asks viewers to comment GUIDE. Komently detects each keyword, replies under the comment, and sends the download link in Messenger. Instead of 45 minutes a day of manual replies, the creator checks the report in the morning.
Templates for three business types
The pattern is constant: post, trigger, reply, convert. What changes is the copy and the next step you want the lead to take.
Course creator
- Post says
- “Comment GUIDE and I’ll send you the free planner.”
- They comment
- GUIDE
- Komently sends
- “Hey [Name], here’s your guide: [link]. One quick question before you dig in: what’s the biggest challenge you’re trying to solve right now?”
E-commerce brand
- Post says
- “Flash sale until midnight. Comment SALE for your code.”
- They comment
- SALE
- Komently sends
- “You’re in! Here’s your code: SAVE20. Use it at checkout before midnight: [link].”
Local service
- Post says
- “New patient offer this month. Comment BOOK for the scheduling link.”
- They comment
- BOOK
- Komently sends
- “Thanks for your interest! Here’s the link to book a time that works for you: [link]. It takes about two minutes.”
The follow-up question in the first template is the most important line. It turns a freebie download into a conversation, and a conversation into an email capture. On paid plans, AI replies write a different message for each commenter so a large batch never reads as copy-paste.
Four metrics that show whether it’s working
Check these weekly in the Komently dashboard, per automation.
- Trigger rate. Qualifying comments as a share of all comments. Low usually means a keyword mismatch or a post that did not make the call to action clear.
- Reply delivery. Messenger replies sent as a share of triggers. Failures point to Page settings or a person whose privacy settings block message requests.
- Click-through rate. Clicks on the link inside the reply. Low with good delivery means the copy is not making the value clear before the link.
- Lead conversion. Emails, bookings or purchases from the flow. The number that ties the auto responder to revenue.
If clicks are low but delivery is strong, rewrite the reply. If the trigger rate is low, fix the keyword or the post’s call to action.
Staying inside Meta’s rules for Pages
Automated replies are fully allowed on Facebook Pages when they use Meta’s official API, which Komently does. Three rules matter:
- Pages only. Personal profiles cannot be automated, and tools that ask for your Facebook password instead of Meta’s login are operating outside the rules.
- One private reply per comment, sent within seven days of the comment. Komently enforces this automatically; once the person replies, the conversation continues in the normal messaging window.
- No unsolicited messaging. The reply goes only to the person who commented, never to a list.
Compliance responsibility rests with the Page owner, so vet any tool by two questions: does it connect through Meta’s login, and does it support Pages rather than profiles? The full picture is in safe DM automation for Instagram and Facebook.
Start with one automation and let the data decide
Facebook comments are some of the highest-intent moments your Page has. When someone stops scrolling and types a response, they are signalling interest. A well-configured auto responder turns that moment into a conversation before the lead disappears, at any hour, whether your team is online or not.
Set one up on your next post and check the report the next morning. If you also run Instagram, the same keywords work there; see the Instagram comment-to-DM guide.
