Test your automation (and why your own comment gets no DM)
How to check a new automation works without tripping the safety rules that skip your own comments and repeat triggers.
The most common "it's not working" report we get is from creators testing an automation on their own post, from their own account. Nothing is broken — three safety rules are doing their job. Here is what they are and how to test around them.
Your own comment is skipped on purpose
When the account that owns the post comments on it, Komently ignores that comment. Instagram and Facebook do not let a business message itself, and replying to your own comments would look like spam to Meta. So commenting guide under your own Reel will never trigger a DM to you.
What you'll see
In your automation's activity the comment shows as skipped with the reason "own account". That is expected, not a failure. One DM per person, one private reply per comment
- Repeat triggers are skipped for 10 minutes. If the same person triggers the same automation twice in a row, the second one is ignored so nobody gets duplicate DMs. Commenting five times in a row to "make sure" produces exactly one DM.
- Meta allows one private reply per comment, ever. A comment that already got its DM cannot get another one, even from Rewind.
- Tapping your own button. On Facebook, when you tap the "Send me the access" button on a private reply as the Page, Facebook shows a 👍 instead of sending the tap to Komently. Only a real visitor's tap arrives.
How to test properly
- 1
Use the Simulator first
Automations → the flask icon next to your automation. It runs the real automation with your real keyword, messages and email flow, and shows every reply instantly — no Meta rules in the way. If the Simulator passes, the automation is set up correctly. - 2
Then test live from a different account
Ask a friend, or use a personal account that does not own the post. Comment the keyword once and wait up to a minute. Make sure that account can receive message requests from businesses. - 3
Check the account status
On the Instagram or Facebook page in Komently the account must show as connected and "receiving events". If it shows a fix button, press it first.
Still no DM? Check these, in order
- Keyword. Plain keywords match anywhere in the comment; a keyword in quotes must be the whole comment.
- Post scope. A specific-post automation only fires on the posts you linked. "All posts" fires everywhere.
- The tester already got it. Same person, same automation, within 10 minutes → skipped.
- Privacy settings. If the tester's account blocks message requests from businesses, Instagram declines the DM. Komently shows this as "Instagram declined", not as an error.
- Plan limits. On the Free plan, automations pause once the month's DMs are used up; the dashboard says so.
- Opted out. Someone who ever replied "stop" to the account gets no automated DMs again. Their contact in Audience shows an "Unsubscribed" badge with the date.
